Ricky Hatton Planning A Comeback

Former welterweight and light welterweight world champion Ricky Hatton is making plans for a comeback to the ring. Hatton last fought in May, a second round KO loss to Manny Pacquiao. Many, including Hatton himself, thought that could be his final fight. After taking a long break from training, the Manchester Evening News says talks have begun for a fight between Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez. An official announcement regarding Hatton’s fighting status is expected some time in February.

The 10 Best Boxers of the Decade

When separating the best from the rest, especially in boxing, every detail of a fighter’s career matters. More important than the number of wins he chalked up or the number of titles he captured are questions like who he fought and how he performed against his best opponents. Did he ever look vulnerable and how did he respond to adversity?

And when looking at the best of a decade, longevity comes into the discussion. Was the fighter able to maintain a championship pace for nearly all 10 years or just five? Battling the inevitability of getting older, did he somehow manage to improve as a fighter? Did he extend his career beyond the average expiration date or did he never recover from a particular defeat?

Whittling down the details takes time, but this system seemed a fair and accurate way to go about determining just who were the best fighters from this decade:

Setting the time parameters from 2000 to 2009 and looking at each man’s biggest fights, who was the best in the sport the longest?

With that out of the way, it’s time to unveil…

Mayweather/Marquez does one million buys

After days of speculation, the real number has finally been revealed: the Floyd Mayweather/Juan Manuel Marquez bout from last weekend did slightly more than one million pay per view buys. It accounted for $52 million pay per view revenue, with the lions share going to Mayweather.

Report: Mayweather/Marquez goes above one million buys

Consider this very good news for boxing in general: the Floyd Mayweather Jr./Juan Manuel Marquez bout from last Saturday pulled at least one million pay per view buys, and may go as high as 1.6 million when all is said and done.

That’s from Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, who reported the news last night.

The UFC is a privately owned company and does not have to release its pay-per-view sales, which it chooses not to do. Occasionally, we’re able to find out what a particular fight sold, but it’s not often. From what I’m hearing, though, the Mayweather fight had a convincing victory. I’m hearing the Mayweather-Marquez pay-per-view is going to come in at or near 1 million sales. I don’t have a verifiable figure for the UFC, but I believe it will be far lower than 1 million. The boxing number should be released by Thursday at the latest and perhaps on Wednesday.

We’re almost always able to find out what the UFC does on PPV, but it comes from the cable companies and not from Zuffa itself. But Kevin is absolutely correct about UFC 103; I would be absolutely shocked if it breaks the 600,000 buy barrier. I think a number around 450,000 is probably more accurate, which isn’t bad when you consider that the show was headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort in a non-title catchweight bout.

As I said above, this is very good news for boxing. It’s also very good news for “Money” Mayweather, who cements himself as one of the biggest PPV draws in combat sports.

Mayweather Back With a Vengeance After Domination of Marquez

Floyd Mayweather picked up an easy unanimous decision victory to move to 40-0 in what was considered the best performance of his career. I would have to agree with this sentiment. The fight could be seen as another Mayweather boxing exhibition that had no business going the distance. More than that, the fight was more symbolic than any previous Floyd Mayweather fight because it was about proving to people that he was still the pound-for-pound king, not reaffirming that position.
