Shane Carwin Announces Retirement: Former UFC Interim Champion Calling It Quits
by Scott "Kubryk" Sawitz on May 7, 2013

His most famous moment would come at the expense of Brock Lesnar as Shane Carwin, who wrecked Frank Mir in spectacular fashion, was seconds away from finishing Lesnar at UFC 116. Lesnar would survive, and go on to finish Carwin in the second, but the mystique of Lesnar was shattered that night. It may have been Lesnar’s finest performance, athletically, but we always wondered “what if” in regards to Carwin. Carwin would only fight once after UFC 116, a punishing loss to Junior Dos Santos for the right to challenge Cain Velasquez, and has been hurt ever since. People always wondered whether or not he’d come back as the surgeries mounted.

After pulling out of a scheduled fight with Roy Nelson at the end of 2012, in what was supposed to culminate a season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Carwin has announced his retirement from the sport via his Twitter feed.
