Chris Weidman Expects 4-6 Month Recovery For Torn Labrum
by Scott "Kubryk" Sawitz on November 28, 2012

Chris Weidman had his house destroyed during Hurricane Sandy and then tore up his shoulder training to fight Tim Boetsch. A torn labrum, to be specific, and he went on Twitter to discuss it.

Earlier today he had the following two Tweets:

“Off to get surgery today.Excited to get this over with and get rehabbing and come back stronger then ever. Thanks for the support #godisgood

“@UYsiJOSH: @ChrisWeidmanUFC how long before you can fight again?” I’m told ill be at 100 percent at 4 months if everything goes smoothly.”

Kubryk’s Commentary: Normally we at Inside Fights don’t like discussing fighters and their injury recoveries but I have personal experience in this as I had the exact injury repaired 11 years ago.

Four months is about right for recovery depending on how they decide to cut into him; they can either repair via arthroscopic means or do a full shoulder reconstruction. It all depends on the tear; I tore up several other things as well as the labrum thus I had the full reconstruction but the recovery for both surgeries is about four months in total. He won’t be able to fight in four months; he should be released in about four months to be able to get back into the gym then after physical therapy, et al, is completed.

It takes a good year for everything to really heal, though, as the shoulder takes time to adjust as things like muscle memory, et al, take a while to come back completely.
