Brock Lesnar is a worthy champion
by Will Cooling on July 6, 2010
When Brock Lesnar stepped into the octagon Saturday night in Las Vegas he was faced with the toughest opponent of his career. In Shane Carwin he faced somebody who could not only match his size and power, but possessed the most devastating punching power in all of combat sports.

The way that Lesnar handled the threat proved that he’s not only a worthy champion but also the best heavyweight in MMA.

The fight started badly for the heavyweight champion, with Lesnar being overwhelmed in the opening minutes. Carwin swarmed forward, connecting with several hard shots including a vicious uppercut. With Lesnar now on the floor, Carwin unleashed a brutal ground-and-pound attack. To survive such an onslaught not only showed superhuman toughness but the crucial ability to think rationally during a crisis. We must remember none of Carwin’s previous opponents survived the first round, so he knows how to close the show.

Lesnar showed superior positional awareness off the bottom, never risking compromising himself but constantly moving and working to ensure that the referee knew he was still in the fight. This calmness when placed in the worst possible situation was eerily reminiscent of Fedor Emelianenko at his peak.

He also had the killer instinct to see that his adversary was beginning to weakening, seizing on the smallest detail to give him the confidence to move forward to victory. Seeing that Carwin was tiring,  Lesnar pushed the action in the final minute of the first round, using his wrestling to control Carwin and force him to carry his 270-pound frame for the final minute. Not only did this show superior fight strategy but it again demonstrated the exceptional wrestling ability of the former NCAA champion. In his last fight, Carwin destroyed Mir from the same position. But even after the damage he had taken, Lesnar had the technique and brute force to handle Carwin.

This wrestling ability was displayed again in the second round, with Lesnar quickly securing the takedown after which he showed slick grappling to quickly get the mount. Instead of being predictable and trying to work his brutal ground and pound, Lesnar switched to side mount to successfully apply the arm triangle choke. His submission victory once again showed the unique way that Lesnar’s jiujitsu is based on his brute strength as by turning into the arm triangle he successfully concentrated all of his strength onto Carwin’s neck. For all the emphasis on his wrestling, the fact is that Lesnar is unusual in the variety of methods he uses to secure victory. In his last four fights he has won as a result of his top control, his boxing, his ground and pound and his grappling. There are few fighters that can boast so many options, so many ways to defeat their opponents.

His victory Saturday continues a winning streak that has seen him defeat Heath Herring, Randy Couture, Frank Mir and now Shane Carwin. With each fight he has shown significant improvement, with his fighting technique making better use of his exceptional physical attributes. And the scary thing is that although he’s already the heavyweight champion he’s yet to fulfill his full potential. Unlike other famous outsiders such as Bob Sapp and Kimbo Slice, he’s not content to rest on his laurels and live off his celebrity.

Brock Lesnar may have once been an entertainer but he has the heart and mind of a true competitor. He truly is the baddest man on the planet, the best heavyweight fighter in the world.

He is really king of the rings. Be it ring of WWE or UFC :)

Excellent article. I have been a Fedor fan for many years but Brock Lesnar has shown that he is capable of holding that title for the time being. I only hope Fedor responds by joining the UFC so the true MMA ranking can be unified.

    Fedor- it’s your move next.

Carwin showed he’s not been in the situation of being on his back by not locking his half guard to prevent Lesnar from mounting him. That’s the point where Carwin lost the fight.

Its unfortunate that Fedor didn’t join the UFC prior to his loss. His mystique is gone and he no longer has the same leverage or marketing value.

Brock also has myself, clung on his balls. I am on his dick and balls. I love Brock. I am dumb.

I can’t even spell my name correctly. I am an idiot that is in love with Brock’s dick.

Fedor losing really doesn’t do anything for his “mystique”. 1 loss in almost 10 years for a mma fighter is completely unheard of. If Brock can manage roughly 30 wins and no loss then I will say he’s on the same level as Fedor. Fedor’s only other loss came from ref stoppage from bleeding too much. This is really his only true loss. I still consider him the best heavyweight fighter.

I’d love to see Brock and Fedor fight, as most any mma fan would. Brock is pretty overhyped in my honest opinion though. He is a good fighter, but that first round showed just how easily he can be beat if he faces someone who can dish as much power as Brock can.

Brock is a striker. He has a good wrestling background, but he truly is a striker. He bulldozes people and hammerfists them on the ground. He is smart and realized he probably couldn’t do that to Carwin and I acknowledge he is a good fighter. But… he did get pretty lucky that first round. Most refs would have stopped it when he was getting punched in the face and just curled up in the fetal position in the corner.

you are really tripping if you think carwin is more powerful than an elite heavyweight boxer. you go too far with that comment. also- shane carwin is the first guy that was a test of any kind for lesnar. herring? please. the guy is a punching bag and has been for years. couture? woefully undersized. he would have mopped the floor with lesnar if he was anywhere near as big.
mir got very lucky with the leglock. it was beautifully set up, but only an amateur wouldn’t have seen it coming and adjusted- which lesnar was in terms of jiu jitsu.
carwin simply gassed out. that’s why lesnar was able to get the w. plain and simple. there’s no need for embarassing comparison’s to fedor’s chilly composure. no need to call brock lesnar a brilliant strategist for surviving a beating until the other guy got tired of beating him.
carwin is the first person of comparable size that lesnar has fought. those guys are more like super heavyweights, if anything. given enough time to scout supersized talent, lesnar will be exposed. just like tim sylvia- who seemed unbeatable once too.

Brock was the beneficiary of a call that could have gone either way. He was getting the shit beat out of him. Carwin showed more class in defeat than Brock appears to have in his entire body.

I don’t know what Mike is saying about Fedor because he tapped out last week.

As far as Lesnar, if you are the best ever champ after only 6 fights then what does that say about the sport.

It’s 70% pure luck, if you get caught in a submission it’s over even if you were dominating the fight.

  • Pakman

Yeah, this fight doesnt do nothing for the brock bandwagon, he lost in every aspect of the game, expecpt on the submission and the “i can that a bigger beatdown than you” which was the most important thing going out form this fight. Carwin had better standup by far, stuffed all of lesnar takedowns but couldnt finish him, and thats his mistake. Lesnar showed everyone he isnt the monster some think he is, if cain was bigger i think he could be the favoutire for his fight against brock, like randy couture who was dominating until he got caught. I think if you rematch this fight no way lesnar would won it by submission, maybe g’n'p.
