Hometown boy Jim Miller faced off against jiu-jitsu wizard Mark Bocek in the opening fight of the main card of UFC 111. The fight hit the ground early and often, as the two battled for the full fifteen minutes.

Miller was taken down in the first round and immediately looked for several submission attempts. An armlock from the bottom nearly left Bocek with no option but to tap. However, he avoided the submission attempt, and Miller took top control and through down some ground and pound. Bocek received a nice cut that would be noticeable for the entire fight.

The second round was all Bocek, as the submission ace took the fight down and moved to Miller’s back. Bocek locked on a body triangle that trapped Miller’s right arm, but was unable to submit the brown belt, even with almost two minutes spent on his back.

The third round was a very even round. The two started standing, but Bocek landed a takedown in the latter half of the round. However, with time running low, Miller took the back and finished in the dominant position.

The judges’ scorecards were issued and it was very unclear as to who would take the victory. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of the Jersey boy Miller, who takes another step towards the top of the UFC lightweight division.
