Allegations of Mayweather Racism Are Irresponsible and Juvenile
By Paul Magno - March 8, 2010 | Email the author

Filipino journalist and commentator, Chino Trinidad, has found himself at the center of a manufactured controversy surrounding claims that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s publicist, Kelly Swanson, intentionally snubbed the Filipino media during the Los Angeles portion of the Mayweather-Mosley publicity tour.

Trinidad alleges that he and another Filipino journalist were directly told by Swanson that the Philippine media was essentially banned from accessing Mayweather Jr at the press conference.

Of course, some dim-witted bomb throwers were bound to latch on to the issue and milk it for some cheap publicity. At the expense of any sense of fair play or journalistic ethics, a Pacquiao fan boy at The Examiner immediately pounded fingers on keyboard and produced a poorly thought-out, incendiary article aimed at taking dig number one million at Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Knowing the writer in question’s work (a writer who once threatened to stab me in a Twitter disagreement), I’m sure the article was only designed to bring traffic his way and ingratiate himself to a Pacquiao inner circle that he so desperately wants to be part of. However, if you have any sort of journalistic integrity, you simply can’t just blindly lob accusations of racism without being willing to hear both sides of the issue.

Kelly Swanson, speaking to Paula Duffy (also of The Examiner), has denied the accusations of racial bias and said that her denial of access to Trinidad had to do with the fact that Trinidad and the other reporter arrived late to the press conference and had informed her that they wanted to speak to Mayweather about Manny Pacquiao and the drug testing issue, two topics that were off limits for all media.

From the Paula Duffy article:

Swanson remembers the two journalists and she said that, “They arrived after other TV crews were gone. I told them that Floyd was not going to answer questions related to Manny Pacquiao and drug testing.” According to Ms. Swanson, that is what the media members were interested to discuss with her client.

She continued, “I at no time refused them the opportunity to speak with Floyd Mayweather. They were welcome to go down to where he was with the fans and wait to see if he would give them an interview. But he would have told them what he has told many other media members this week about keeping to the topic at hand.”

Even if Mayweather had chosen to exclude Trinidad, exclusively, he very well may have had reason to do so.

Chino Trinidad has been a long time Mayweather critic and a hanger-on in the ever-growing Pacquiao cadre of star-struck journalists and “yes men” looking to social climb their ways into Manny’s good graces.

This is what Trinidad had to say about Mayweather in a recent video interview:

That guy punches like a Power Puff girl…. (Floyd) You’re dead…Who’s running scared? Floyd is…Floyd Mayweather is in the trash can.

So, you reap what you sew in this business. I know that, after being critical of Pacquiao over recent months, I’d never get access to a no-limits interview with Manny. Trinidad should also understand that nobody has to talk to you if they feel that you’re just there to ambush them.

If the Mayweather camp did single out a certain racial group for exclusion, it’s simply horrible and worthy of condemnation. But it’s hard to believe that Swanson, an experienced publicist, would be so blatant with something as incendiary as what is being claimed.

It’s even harder to believe the characters making these claims.

The first rule of journalism is to never fall in love with those you seek to cover…The second rule is to get your facts straight before jealously lashing out at your man crush’s enemies…

  2. So Mr. Writer, How would you feel if you are being accused as steroid user and Philippines is the best source for PEDs without a single piece of evidence?

  4. Ok, so what if Manny refused to talk to african-american media because he didn’t wantb to answere questions about floyd? I’m sure the NAACP would not like that. They would probably attack manny for it too. Would you consider those attacks irresponsible and juvenile?

Do you consider Floyd’s calling out the nation of then phillipines for being the biggest steroid peddlers on erth irresponsible and juvenile?

Are you saying that it’s okay for floyd camp to make racist remarks, call out the phillipines for producing A-side Meth, slandering their champion as being a cheater and then refusing to man up to it when the media and filipino media simply want to ask a few questions about it?

People actually respected floyd….he’s loosing a lot of respect by us americans, let alone the rest of the world.

  5. BS…

“She can not deny that. She can not deny that,” and added, “So they’re making liars out of me and Joseph Pimentel. Maybe I can provide her with some video to show and get her saying very clearly to my face, we Filipinos can not interview Floyd Mayweather Jr. and she’s denying it right now. I’m willing to go to court here in the US to prove a point. I think right now she’s denying it right now because she’s getting all the flack for mishandling and treating Filipinos in such a bastardly manner.”

According to Jeff De Guzman, he asked Kelly Swanson for the reason why Filipinos were refused to allow to interview Mayweather and she responded by saying that they was only following Mayweather’s instruction.

Make of it what you will but Don’t make a liar out of yourself without knowing the fact! Or maybe you are a Lair?

  6. I’m a Filipino and I can attest to the fact that Phillipines media was in fact at that press conference.

If you go to the 1:46 mark of this, you’ll see the ABS-CBN microphone hoisted up at Leonard Ellerbe.

So yeah, it was irresponsible journalism to go on a story like that without getting the full facts.

I love Pacquiao but I also see the facts as they’re presented. Magno knows me well enough and we’ve had our arguments and differences, especially on the Pacquiao-Mayweather debacle so don’t think I’ve been on his side about this the entire time. Facts are facts and a picture says it all.

  7. Mr. Writer, Chino Trinidad has a video of it. If you really want the truth, you better ask to Chino for a copy. Floyd wants to clean boxing and be like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X but it becomes ironic since he is a racist. Keep on defending Kelly Swanson.

There are time when he’s like on a low quality weed or something.. That’s why solarsports PPV doesn’t sell well here. & even people at pirated dvd stands always ask for the HBO version rather than hear chino say: ” itong mama na ito” , “Makikita niyo ang galing ng isang manny pacquiao”. Age doesn’t matter if the fighter still has the determination. But does Mosley still have it in him? After a long inactivity, bad publicity and bad promotion does he still have it in him? I wonder why can’t he speak for himself when asked regaring PEDs issue on Oscar. I beleive Shane is just a puppet under the GBP banner. He will do, whatever Floyd says because his team leave him no choice. That’s it, because Floyd is the one calling the shots for him and not his colleagues. This was just like Mayweather-Marquez contract issue on weight w/c they left Marquez w/ no choice but to accept the fact that Floyd is overweight and he’ll get paid w/ the fine stated based on the revised contract. Wow! So, is Shane too old? Yes I really do believe he is old, because he forgot his rights. Not just old but stupid too!

I’ve never said that I supported the Mayweathers’ accusations against Pacquiao and I most definitely do not subscribe to the theory that two wrongs make a right.

My article and the video disprove the accusations of wrongdoing just as the blood tests would’ve disproved the accusations leveled at Manny.

Let Floyd stand and be a man of what he is saying whether he is goin to jail or whatever as long as he stand and be a man of what he says not like now that there is a scripted interview….is that what journalistic has.

  51. Mr. Magno,

It seems that you yourself doesn’t have journalistic integrity base on what you have wrote above. Have you tried asking the other side’s opinion regarding the matter? Or have you purely based your opinion on what Simeon Vergara wrote?

And regarding the video, I think they didn’t claim that they were banned at the whole conference. They were banned in interviewing Mayweather because he doesn’t want to talk to Filipinos.

Let me quote a portion of your article:

“So, you reap what you sew in this business. I know that, after being critical of Pacquiao over recent months, I’d never get access to a no-limits interview with Manny. Trinidad should also understand that nobody has to talk to you if they feel that you’re just there to ambush them.”

I can agree with you that, if Mayweather feels that Trinidad is just there to ambush him, it’s okay. Now when you are being critical of Pacquiao as you mentioned in your article. Did they held you out of Pacquiao’s interviews? You weren’t given access to no-limits interview because everybody wasn’t given a no-limits interview. But still you were still given access to interview Pacquiao. And I would like to also point out that if Mayweather doesn’t want to be asked about Pacquiao. He should have stopped bashing Pacquiao before their Press-con.

I think you better get your facts together, Sir.

  60. PAUL…While your article maybe true about Ms. Swanson’s rational action, we can’t deny that Floyd Mayweather’s is the same. We all know how PBF deals with his opponents. Although I don’t call it racism, there is still a Pacquiao factor of Chino Trinidad not being allowed in the press room. Also, you made it obvious why this article is made. It’s published not really to justify PBF actions but to air the dirty laundry between you and two Filipino boxing writers and your displeasure for not being close to Pacquiao. If you are a Filipino, why write this unecessary article? why not expose Floyd’s true color so people will feel validated for not supporting this self centered-man? Revealing FBP’s “I dont care about the Fans” attitude will by far outweigh your no-racism article.

They are for sale…It’s no secret in the media and among boxing people.

While they may not take direct bribes from fighters, they only exist to write things that will appeal to the biggest audience.

If they felt they could make more money from sucking up to Mayweather, they’d be writing glowing articles about Floyd.

Face it, they only write to exploit the Filipino community…Guillermo is a groupie and Marley is low-end call girl.

  72. Hey Magno… I’ve read a number of articles about this incident, but I don’t remember having read Mr. Trinidad cried “racism”. What he said was he and another Filipino journ companion (not of ABS-CBN) were treated rudely by Kelly Swanson and he has video to prove that even if he goes to a US court.

Two, you quoted one “Simeon Vergara” and a link to his article. But Vergara’s testimony was immediately belied by a Jeff Guzman, himself a witness, whom Examiner D. Guillermo interviewed.

Three, we all understand that Kelly Swanson is Mayweather’s publicist who denies Trinidad’s accusations. Now, publicists are publicists who can (and must) weave fairy tales and outirght lies to make their clients look good. Thus, if you’re working for a delusional, insecured, pathological liar like Floyd Mayweather, it’s justified to think that Ms. Swanson is herself lying to her teeth.

Question: Are you, Mr. Magno, a Mayweather publicist, too?

  74. OK, so you say it with much gusto about how some Pacnut journalists irresponsibly claim that they were discriminated from the conference.

But you did not in anyway say anything about the nature of how the Mayweathers do no want to answer questions about baseless accusations and juvenile mudslinging against the Pacman.

You cry because of a little stone thrown your gay lover’s way, but turn a blind eye at how he and his drug dealing family continue to destroy the sport.

  80. @ Paul Magno

as you have quoted “The second rule is to get your facts straight before jealously lashing out at your man crush’s enemies…”

    1. get your facts straight

as dennis “dsource” guillermo of examiner.com interviewed trinidad, dennis guillermo says “In an interview I did with Trinidad after being informed of Swanson’s denial, the earnest broadcaster said, “She can not deny that. I think right now she’s denying it right now because she’s getting all the flack for mishandling and treating Filipinos in such a bastardly manner.”

trinidad will provide videos that will tell the whole story…so get our facts straight and not just quote one line.

2.before jealously lashing out at your man crush’s enemies…”

i think you’re a jealous stupid writer im surprised why this site includes you as their writer…

you are speaking at the right person which is yourself…

    Asshole…..

  82. @julius, Why say something towards Americans? Have you ever been to our country? We have every race or background living here and thats what seperates us from everyone. If you are praying for our governments downfall then good luck. How many countries do we help? When their is a natural disaster & etc. I sometimes wish we would leave other countries alone and if they drown thats not our problem but we don’t. Why! Because thats not the American way even if i agree to disagree. If their was no America then World War 3 would have started a long time ago. You use God and the word prophecy to pray for our downfall but not when you need our help. Reminder- America is not falling nor will she ever.

  83. mr magno, you’re the one making big hits here. why accuse the philippine media of manufactured controversy, were you there when it happened? if you’d only believe miss swanson and insult trinidad then you are a biased writer and this article of yours is a cheap production of a floyd nuthugger fanclub. miss swanson is paid by the golden boy promotion which has a case of defamation in court by pacquiao. if you want to make sure how respectable this people are we’ll wait and see on the result of their cases.
we also have so many evidence that floyd jr is truly a disrespecting person, a hideous trash talker and a lunatic. does that count as evidence to you?
chito trinidad is internationally recognized and respected journalist. dont try to make claims that he aint.

  85. Chino is biased and because he fell in love with Pacman he is no longer a credible source of good journalism. Tell him to show up at a press conference on time and not in “Filipino” time if he wants an interview. Manny is awesome but alot of the fanatics should be watching wrestling instead of boxing because they are quite ignorant.

“Chino Trinidad has been a long time Mayweather critic and a hanger-on in the ever-growing Pacquiao cadre of star-struck journalists and “yes men” looking to social climb their ways into Manny’s good graces.”

And we’re suppose to believe your being objective?
Look up the meaning of the words credibility and being objective in the dictionary again…
    also look up quasi-journalist…

“The first rule of journalism is to never fall in love with those you seek to cover…The second rule is to get your facts straight before jealously lashing out at your man crush’s enemies…”

He’s a no good person and bottom feeder. I don’t believe in his story one bit. If he has the video, he would have aired it by now but since he hasn’t, the video is bogus. He has his opinion and I have mine and we agree to disagree a lot. The initial story that came out was NO Philippine media was allowed, then was lowered down to just those two guys. I do take pride in the fact that dedicated groupies and pond scum, Dennis Guillermo and Michael Marley, have backed off the story and are distancing themselves from allegations of racism.
