A War, A Bore, and A Robbery: A Day in the Life of Boxing

As Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley get closer to signing on the dotted line and Manny Pacquiao continues to sell thousands of tickets in Cowboys stadium, the actual business of boxing continues to chug along.

Last night was boxing being boxing, for better or worse, and it was about time business went on as usual.

* Jesse Brinkley was supposed to roll over and let promising slugger, Curtis Stevens, pad his resume en route to a title shot. Instead, a home town crowd went crazy and inspired Brinkley to the performance of his career by out-thinking, out-hustling and eventually even out-slugging Stevens in a one-sided unanimous decision.

* Erislandy Lara continued his climb to the top against veteran Grady Brewer via TKO 10. Unfortunately,  boxing being boxing, Lara-Brewer, on Fox Sports, was up against Brinkley-Stevens on ESPN2 and us fans had to choose which bout to watch. I chose Brinkley-Stevens.

* In typical fashion, the first half of Friday Night Fights, featuring a one-sided snoozer, went completely unopposed…

* Two quality prospects: Chris Avalos and Archie Ray Marquez impressed on Showtime’s ShoBox…Unfortunately, it was on at the same time as the Fox Sports show…

* The Fox Sports main event featured defending WBA Light Heavyweight champ, Gabriel Campillo, utterly outclassing Beibut Shumenov in a compelling rematch…until the scores were read to reveal that two of the judges actually scored the fight for Shumenov. Special recognition goes to judge Patricia Morse Jarman, who had it a ridiculous 117-111 for Shumenov, pretty much securing her victory in 2010′s Year End Awards for Worst Judge.

All in all, another day in boxing…Something to excite, something to bitch about, and a whole lot to look forward to…

  1. mosely n mayweather is the second best fight beside mayweather n pacquiao….mosey will give anyone of them a helluva fight n could very well win…anyways, beside the money, either one would be better off not fighting mosley if they want to win…..
