Pacquiao’s $30 Million Superstition
by Trent Pusey on December 25, 2009

Two years ago, no one would have predicted that Manny Pacquiao could move up in weight, and seemingly get better. It’s the thing that fairy tales are made of. Which is why Manny Pacquiao’s story has been so enticing. He has made the impossible seem possible.

The recent posturing over drug testing in the negotiations for Pacquiao’s next fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. have cast a cloud of doubt over Pacquiao’s legacy. It hasn’t started storming yet, and there is a great possibility that all this could just blow over, but the skies are suddenly not so sunny.

Pacquiao began his career in 1995 and weighed in at 106 pounds. He won his first world title in 1998 at 112 pounds. Manny’s exciting style endeared him to fans as he became a must-see fighter in the mid-2000s. Manny took on the best boxers the 130-pound division had to offer: Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera. He seemed to fear no one and was constantly driven by the next challenge.

Since 2008, Manny Pacquiao has fought at 135 lbs, 140 lbs, and 147 lbs. He has maintained his power without losing any of his speed. He was able to take the best shots from bigger men like Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, even though Pacquiao has been no stranger to the canvas in the past. He’s been knocked out twice and been knocked down or staggered by fighters such as Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera. So how is it that Pacquiao can move up in weight and only seem to get better?

Floyd Mayweather’s team believe they have the answer.

The Mayweather camp is insisting that both men subject themselves to Olympic-style drug testing overseen by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., has accused Manny of using illegal substances even though Manny Pacquiao has never failed a drug test.

The urine tests issued by boxing commissions don’t detect everything. Shane Mosley admitted to injecting himself with EPO, a performance-enhancing drug linked to endurance, to a grand jury during the BALCO trial in 2003. Shane Mosley did not fail his drug tests issued by the boxing commission.

The Steroid Era of Major League Baseball has proven that countless offenders can pass a drug test. Baseball players from Jose Canseco to Alex Rodriguez have admitted to using illegal substances, although neither were suspended for failing a drug test.

Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, had the following to say regarding the issue of drug testing for the fight:

“Let’s be very clear on the real issues we differ on. It’s not about being tested. Manny is onboard with that since it’s such a major concern of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. It’s about who does the testing and the scheduling of the procedures. Manny will submit to as many random urine tests requested. Regarding the blood tests, he will subject himself to three tests; one given in January during the week the fight is formally announced, one thirty days from the fight, no later than February 13, and the final one immediately following the fight, in Manny’s locker room. The major issue related to the testing rests with which independent agency will administer these tests. The United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) cannot do it because they will not amend its procedures to accommodate the blood testing schedule we have outlined. USADA, under its guidelines, would have the right to administer random blood tests as many times as they want up to weigh-in day and that is ludicrous.”

This is paranoia at its finest. Mayweather believes Pacquiao is on the juice even though he’s never failed a drug test. Pacquiao believes a tablespoon of blood taken less than 48 hours before his fight will weaken him. Arum believes an athlete should be able to set the dates for his own drug test.

Bob Arum is simply doing what a boxing promoter does. He’s looking out for his own man’s best interests. If Arum was representing Floyd in this fight, then he would be touting the legitimacy of the USADA and claiming that Pacquiao must have something to hide if he doesn’t want to submit to their tests.

Everyone is wrong here, but Mayweather’s demands are the least ridiculous.

Mayweather realizes that Pacquiao has never failed a drug test, so he wants an outside agency to handle the testing. He recommends the USADA, which can offer the most comprehensive tests to ensure both men are clean for the fight. Pacquiao has refused, citing superstition as his reasoning for backing out of a fight that is estimated to earn him $30 million.

Most people would throw a black cat through a mirror while walking under a ladder for $30 million. It’s absurd to think that this is the reason that the fight may not happen. And if you are on the side that thinks Paqcuiao is taking illegal substances, this only adds fuel to your fire.

Pacquiao demanded Mayweather pay $10 million for every pound he comes in over the weight limit, should Mayweather come in heavy for the fight. The monetary value is arbitrary. Its intent is to keep Floyd from coming in overweight and it is a just demand. Mayweather should not be allowed to come in over the contractual weight limit. Pacquiao’s camp made the provisions they felt were necessary to keep the fight on an even level, no matter how ludicrous it sounds.

Mayweather’s camp feels that Pacquiao may not be a drug-free fighter so they recommend the USADA conduct the drug tests. It seems far less ludicrous than $10 million per pound, yet it is the one roadblock separating Pacquiao-Mayweather from becoming Pacquiao-Malignaggi.

If Pacquiao has something to hide, then this fairy tale we’ve been watching for the last two years comes to a tragic end.

    Mr. Pusey,

Tell me where and when Pacquiao ever cited not taking the blood tests due to superstition?? Tell me! If you cant find it, its because he never said it! I understand you dont understand Tagalog, but i do and i have never heard him say its due to superstition. You as a writer has a responsibility to your readers all over the world to present your article as clearly and as accurately as possible. Write responsibly or stop writing.

the author’s name should be spelled PUSSY. you people don’t understand a thing about conditioning during or after an athlete’s training session. put that into another perspective on how singers or any top-level celeb/figure preparation before any public appearance…I don’t even need to mention names here…but an excellent counter-serving Agassi did little against the serve+volley strike of Sampras on many occasion, that little Floyd’s defense won’t block Manny’s two-handed offensive if they both fight in the ring (so stop talking Floyd and prove yourself in the ring!)

  • MR. PUSSY

HEY MR. PUSSY! YOUR POST IS GOOD AS GARBAGE! LAWSUITS ARE COMING!

  • TRENT PUSSY

I’M SORRY FOR THE ARTICLE I WROTE. I’M SUCH AN IDIOT THAT I ACCEPTED THE MONEY GBP & MAYWEATHERS GAVE TO ME JUST TO WRITE A NON SENSE AND BASELESS ACCUSATION TO PACQUIAO.

I WILL RESIGN TO MY JOB BECAUSE I’M A DISGRACE TO MY COMPANY AND A PUSSY TOO.

  • yebastick

PUSEY, PacMan is not afraid to take a bloood test. Just not the way the Mayweather’s Wants them.

    Get it.

What is so wrong if PacMan takes it “AFTER” the fight?

    What a stupid story slant!

  • http://yahoo Xela

Mayweathers can’t believe that there are stuff better than what they “Use and Push”.We are convinced that they are really into something. If Pac is not on roids then what the hell is it?
Come to the Phil. Mayweathers maybe it’s time for you to visit our homeland. We have lots of Manny’s here perhaps more stronger, the reason why we don’t have lots of boxers here is that we don’t believe in it, as a source of living especially in the north side. But because of Manny, we’ll fill Vegas with lots of ‘Em.Top Rank be quick enough for Arum will scoop them all b-4 u knew.
As to the result of Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, Manny will bring the ire and fury of “Mayon” as Cotto tasted the whirlwind of “Ondoy”.

  • mark

Pacquiao is agreeable to the blood tests except for the random ones. It is understandable because it would be annoying and disruptive of training especially if your not used to it. Also having the blood test right BEFORE or AFTER the fight would just have the same results..Pacquiao is god fearing and is not the cheating type has the right to sue GBP and Floyd SR. cos hes innocent of all accusations.

YOU SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE LIST TO BE SUED BY PACMAN..MR PUSSY!

  • sinister_weatherplot

im glad team pacquiao rejected the USADA testing.. pacman is not invincible! mayweather have the skills to beat the pac but he has to endure a lot of beating first (& stay away from getting knocked-out of his wits)..
i think PBF is not afraid of pacman. i think he has a plan to break mannys game.. jabs, counters & back-pedalling could do the trick.. he aint afraid & for 25mil he will fight godzilla! instead, money is cooking something bigger!

manny will pass the tests, but if PBF wins the bout under the USADA testing (like i said manny’s not invincible), PBF will question pacmans previous victories & will go “i told you dawg, if manny is being monitored he cant do the ‘roids, & without the PEDs in his system he will not win against the bigger opponents! Pacquiaio is a CHEATER & A FRAUD!!”

i say the lawsuit serves them right!!

  • tso paeng

GBP is a hypocrite… the same testing was asked of Mosley/ Judah fight and GBP refused. Its known that Mosley admitted to taking EPO and that was halted by GBP.. why would I agree if they balked at the same idea for one of their fighters who DID TAKE EPO.. Bullshit

The Pacman had already agreed to something in order to meet halfway. Then the Mayweather camp said its no deal. So, who’s not looking to go with the fight? If Mayweather is not opting out of the fight, why take the stance on drug testing Non-Negotiable? The party who puts forward that stance is the first party ready and eager to opt out of the negotiations.

In the first place, Mayweather does not have the authority, moral or otherwise, to dictate the terms. In fact, this imposition upon Pacman is merely glorifying a baseless and insulting accusation.

Since an accusation of somebody using steroids as a way to cheat in a boxing match is a legal issue, in as much as the Pacman is already set on filing the appropriate suit, it is now time for Mayweather father and son, and also the Golden Quitter de la hoya to defend themselves in the court.

But back to the imposition of Olympic drug testing, it s important to note that the Pacman had already agreed to concessions and its up to the Mayweather camp to put up a reasonable counter-offer. A contract is to be concluded on mutual terms of both parties, not on their unilateral terms. In the first place, the bout is taking place in Las Vegas and the state already have rules in place relating to drug testing. All the idiotic comments by wannabee medical experts in the internet boxing blogs doesnt matter. We have yet to hear from all the real medical experts to state their take on Mayweather’s and Pacman’s positions on the matter of drug testing.

There are a few reasons boxing fans should consider:

    1. When and where did it all start? It started when the Pacman fought Hatton and Mayweather Sr. Before the fight, Mayweather was already insulting the Pacman — he has no skills and his fighter will win because he has the better fighter etc. Then the Pacman makes him eat his sh!t by bludgeoning Hatton in only two vicious rounds.

    2. Without any basis for it, the bitter loser in Mayweather Sr came out by saying the Pacman is using steroids, and repeated numerous times. The son joins his father and goes on to belittle the little Pacman by saying he is one-dimensional, lesser skills, and no way Pacman can beat him (Mayweather Jr.).

    3. Despite all these statements by both father and son, we did not hear anything from the Pacman except to state for the record, when asked by a reporter, that he wants to fight the self-proclaimed greatest boxer. The only second time the Pacman opened his mouth is Dec. 25 yesterday (its already dec 26 here in Michigan)by saying he will file a defamation suit, that he wants to fight Mayweather Jr in the ring where he (Pacman) can punch back.

If you look at Pacman’s point of view, it’s not about whether he is hiding something as most of us believes he is clean. It is about Mayweather Snr maligning him, his son rubbing it by insisting an unreasonable drug testing. I do not agree to others saying that even if its unreasonable, the Pacman should yield to the demand of the Mayweather camp. The accusations are wrong, and even if the Pacman comes out clean, the damage had been done to his reputation. The Pacman is also entitled to his idiosyncrasies as much as Mayweather is entitled to it.

If Mayweather doubts the integrity of the Nevada SAC, Pacman also doubts the integrity of Mayweather’s chosen agency. If the Mayweathers have honor, so does, and more so, Pacman. If Mayweather has an ego, the Pacman also has it. If Mayweather thinks he is right, Pacman also thinks he is right. The similarities ends here: Pacman wants to fight Mayweather in the ring without much ado. Mayweather? Only those who see the Mayweathers as the Pied Pipers will agree that he is itching to fight the Pacman with no ifs and buts.

  • Liam

THE MAYWEATHERS ARE JUST SIMPLY SCARED!!! PERIOD!!!

    Words from Pacman himself:
“Mayweather is just making a way or it’s his strategy for me to get angry; to distract me, or maybe it’s just because he(Mayweather) is just NERVOUS. For me, no problem. If he(Mayweather) wants to fight, then both of us should fight. But, if he is scared, then he should gather enough courage first before he decides to fight me.”

MANNY IS WILLING TO BE TESTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIGHT!IT IS THE SAME THING WITH WHAT THE MAYWEATHERS WANT! THE TRUTH IS THEY REALLY WANT TO DESTRUCT MANY AND THAT IS WHAT ALL ABOUT!

  • enteng

    To: Mr.Pusey
Sir you are misleading your readers with the facts you have written specially Pacman’s weight. The issue here is not superstition, its about discrimination, ethics and sportsmanship.
    1. Discrimination – No one should be singled out to take this so called Olympic style test when the prevailing rule does not requires it, If changes should be made then all boxers should undergo that test not just pacman on the behest of an opponent.
    2. Ethics – No one has the right to spread accusations or cast aspersions to his fellowman without any proof. Suspicions must be supported by proof before we can accuse if not that is defamation.
3.Sportsmanship – Boxing is a sport and Boxers should act as sportsmen. Sometimes this is forgotten because of “hype” or trash talk to generate interest.
Well, maybe I belong to another era like Pacman.

  • Eddie

You miss the point Mr. Trent Pussy. It’s all about giving accusations without evidence at all and changing the rules because you want it to. For example: We are both classmates at a certain school. I am the top student and you are way close to the bottom. You study extremely hard for an exam and eventually ace it. You get a higher mark than I do. So, I accuse you of cheating and demand that you take a totally different exam. Would you? Certainly not. 30 million USD is a lot of money. But a libel, slander, oral defamation suit would probably rake in more cash. The burden of proof lies on the accuser. Smart move by the Pacman. This way, he doesn’t have to do the punching and leave the hitting to the lawyers.

  • Eddie

Oh, maybe you forgot Mr. Dick Schaefer not allowing Mosley a drug test even after he confessed to using steroids. What is this crap? No wonder the global economy is in shambles. We have too many bankers with the same quality as Mr. Schaefer. Hypocrites.

  • jones

gaweather come out do not to scare from manny punch! you know that you will be the next victim of manny once you face him inside the ring. you will become more ugly face from monkey to camel face. come on, floyd. do not make any issue that will prevent facing your responsibilities to show the world who is real pfp#1

I stand by my suggestion that Floyd pays Pacquiao $10-M if tested negative from the
Olympic drug testing and Pacquiao pays him too if found positive. If Floyd wont agree with
the payments, no amateur Olympic drug testing be conducted. Floyd Sr said his son will beat
Pacquiao with or without the steroids so let the blood tests be conducted right after the
fight so as not to distract pacquiao in his preparation. – UBF

    DRUG TEST PROCEDURES BEING DEBATED
    By Dan Rafael / ESPN.com / December 22, 2009
    —————————————————————————————-

The Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather welterweight title megafight, tentatively scheduled for March 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is in jeopardy.

According to Golden Boy Promotions, which is representing Mayweather, Pacquiao refused Tuesday to agree to the Olympic-style drug testing procedures the sides had been negotiating.

Mayweather requested that the drug testing for the fight be in compliance with the United States Anti Doping Agency, which handles drug testing for Olympians, “to ensure fair play and sportsmanship by both fighters.”

Olympic style testing is more rigorous than the drug testing performed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and other state commissions. It would involve random blood and urine testing before and after the fight. Nevada commission testing only tests urine for banned substances, once just before the fight and once immediately following the fight.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., the fighter’s father, has repeatedly accused Pacquiao of taking illegal substances, even though Pacquiao denies it and he has never failed a drug test.

According to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who is negotiating the deal with Top Rank president Todd duBoef, Pacquiao refuses to have his blood drawn within 30 days of the bout based on his superstition of testing so close to a fight.

“Todd told me that Pacquiao has difficulty with taking blood and doesn’t want to do it so close to the fight,” Schaefer said. “He, Pacquiao, would only agree to have blood drawn before the kick-off press conference and after the fight.”

Two weeks ago, Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, told ESPN.com that their side had no problem with Olympic style testing.

“I have no problem with the testing whatsoever,” Roach said then. “They can do whatever kind of drug testing they want. They’re scared of Manny and scared of his power. He’ll pass any test in the world.”

Schaefer said he hoped it was simply a “miscommunication” on the Pacquiao side.

“I do hope it is some sort of miscommunication and that Pacquiao is not even aware of what is going on and he will clear this up and say what is good enough for these great Olympic athletes is good enough for him and Floyd, and he agrees to do these drug tests.

“Team Mayweather is very surprised that an elite athlete like Manny Pacquiao would refuse drug testing procedures which Floyd has already agreed to and have been agreed to by many other top athletes. Why would Pacquiao refuse to have the same kind of testing that Lance Armstrong, Michael Phelps, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have had?”

Told of Pacquiao’s reluctance to be tested, Mayweather said he should explain himself.

“I understand Pacquiao not liking having his blood taken because, frankly, I don’t know anyone who really does,” Mayweather said in a statement. “But in a fight of this magnitude, I think it is our responsibility to subject ourselves to sportsmanship at the highest level. I have already agreed to the testing and it is a shame that he is not willing to do the same. It leaves me with great doubt as to the level of fairness I would be facing in the ring that night.

“I hope that this is either some miscommunication or that Manny will change his mind and step up and allow these tests, which were good enough for all these other great athletes, to be performed by USADA.”

Said Leonard Ellerbe, a Mayweather adviser, in a statement, “We hope that Manny will do the right thing and agree to the testing as it is an egregious act to deny the testing and hence, deny the millions of fans the right to see this amazing fight. We just want to make sure there is a level playing field in a sport that is a man-to-man contest that relies on strength and ability.

“I still hope this decision is coming from someone in Pacquiao’s camp and not Manny himself as it would be a shame that an athlete of his stature and who represents his whole country would not be able to show the public or his fellow athletes that he agrees to the highest standards in sports competition.”

Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said the company declined to comment.

Schaefer said he and duBoef had “worked out all other issues related to the fight,” disclosing to ESPN.com that the fight would be at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, if they can work out the drug testing issue.

“We have agreed on all terms, including the site,” Schaefer said.

The MGM Grand beat out several other interested venues, including Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Team owner Jerry Jones had offered a $25 million site fee, the largest in boxing history, but the promoters took an offer from the MGM Grand, whose terms have not been disclosed.

In addition, Schaefer told ESPN.com that the sides had agreed on an unprecedented penalty if either fighter weighed in heavier than the contract limit of 147 pounds.

“We agreed to $10 million per pound, or fraction thereof,” Schaefer said. “That’s what the Pacquiao side wanted and we said OK to that. That’s unheard of. We have agreed on everything except for this drug testing issue. I have to think Pacquiao is unaware of this. The drug testing had been part of the contract for a while and then they suddenly said no. I was informed of that [Tuesday] morning. Suddenly they changed course and I don’t know why.”

Pacquiao wanted a huge monetary penalty if Mayweather was overweight because he ignored the contract limit of 144 pounds for his September fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, coming in at 146 pounds and paying a $600,000 penalty for the extra advantage.

    Silly writer!!

Very biased…these things separates the credibility of good writers from the rest…A GOOD NOSE FOR THE TRUTH!!

Mayweather is simply destroying the reputation of Pacquiao by asking these steroids check, and this writer cant smell the truth behind it.

Please remember this: EVEN IF THE FIGHT WITH MAYWEATHER WONT PUSH THROUGH….I THINK PACQUIAO WILL VOLUNTARILY TEST HIMSELF COME 2010…TO PROVE ALL WRONG.

Then, we all will know who dodge who in the Pac-Mayweather fight.
