Go Hard Or Go Home: Five Fighters That Need to Step Up In 2010
By Bryan Trafford - December 24, 2009 | Email the author

As Christmas approaches, families join together to spread holiday cheer. The fighters that make up this list need not to bother themselves with such things; they should be training for the step up in class we know they need. These guys need to step up and face the real challengers in their divisions, or start filling out job applications. Without further ado…….

1) Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The son of quite possibly the greatest Mexican fighter to ever live, Chavez Jr. just might be the worst Mexican fighter to ever live.  Ok, not the worst, but he is horribly average. His 42-0-1 record is about as legit as Butterbean’s first 40 or so fights.  Let’s hold our breath and see if he fights somebody in the top ten at 154 in 2010.

2) Kelly Pavlik

Yes, I know that Kelly “13th Round” Pavlik is THE Middleweight Champion of the world. However in 2009 he fought a grand total of two times, against Marco Antonio Rubio, and Miguel Espino. If he doesn’t fight Paul Williams in 2010, he should just ceremoniously hand him the titles.

3) BJ Flores

Despite being 24-0, BJ Flores’ best career win is over a guy nicknamed the “Ding-a-Ling Man.”  Unless Flores wants to make announcing his full time job, it’s time to fight the big boys. Flores your phone is ringing, it’s Steve Cunningham on line one.

4) Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Let’s just assume Mayweather vs. Pacquiao doesn’t get made for whatever reason. Anyone else out there get the feeling we might see Mayweather vs. Malignaggi or Mayweather vs. Amir Khan? I certainly do. Note to Floyd, you’re in your thirties, it’s now or never. You have a few years left to show us you’re not all talk when you say you’re an all-time great.

5) Allan Green

Green is the seventh man in the Super Six tournament. His name has been thrown in the hat as a potential Jermain Taylor replacement. So far, Green’s whole career has been as a replacement. He’s the other guy. The B- fighter.  Green’s biggest career fight is a loss to Edison Miranda, and Green is 30 years old. If Green doesn’t plan to go for the gusto in 2010, I will gladly slide him my laptop and let him chime in on our Inside Fights liveblogs.

I would like to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  2. Floyd has a few years? He’s hasn’t taken any punishment throughout his entire career. Bernard has been winning fights since he turned forty. Mosley devoured Margarito at the age of 38. Mayweather has better defensive skills than both of those fighters. He could fight until he’s in his forties and still beat the elite fighters…. unless they take PEDs.

  3. You really think if Pacman-Mayweather doesn’t happen then Freddie Roach will put another one of his fighters (Khan) in with a Golden Boy fighter and Floyd to boot? You may want ti rethink that!

  4. You’re a little behind the information curve Bryan. Williams got battered by a junior middleweight with a 50% KO ratio against questionable opposition. Now Team williams is running away from Pavlik just as fast as they can run. Next time, do a little research before you post.

  10. yeah, floyd can fight until he’s 40 or even 50. you know why? coz he fights those he’s sure to win against. he can never defeat elite fighters. you know why? coz he doesnt fight them. you can all say he can beat them, but the fact is he hasnt, and hed never take the chance. the fact is, he hasnt. keyword HASNT. that means he hasnt won against them until he fights them. sorry floyd fans. and dont put dirt on peoples name by implying they use illegal drugs if you have no proof. the fact is pacquiao is willing to take tests and prove hes clean, just not by mayweather’s rules. who made him the authority anyways? why get bullied into what they say is “the proper way of getting tested” when proving it can even be done post fight? mayweather’s just scared as hell.
