Pacquiao vs. Cotto: Is The Fix In?
by Paul Magno on November 8, 2009

With Cotto-Pacquiao staring us in the face, I can’t shake this cynical feeling that the fix may be in.

I’m not talking about the fight being fixed, pro-wrestling style.

There won’t be a room full of greasy old men chomping on 10 dollar cigars, planning out the details of a bogus fight. No, it’ll have to do with the tidal wave of sports history washing over and beating down a bonafide warrior from the island nation of Puerto Rico.

Reigning WBO Welterweight champ, Miguel Cotto, hasn’t caught too many breaks lately.  He’s been beaten with allegedly illegal wraps by Antonio Margarito and, in his most recent fight, he was cut badly and pushed to the edge by tough African welter, Joshua Clottey.

Even when signing for the fight of his career and his largest payday to date, Cotto has been on the receiving end of less than fair treatment for a fighter considered to be one of boxing’s biggest names.

First, a catchweight stipulation was forced on him as a condition for making the Pacquiao bout. A catchweight of 145 lbs., on the surface is not all that brutal for Cotto, a fighter who weighed-in at 146 for his last contest.

However, for Team Pacquiao, the poundage, itself, was never the issue. The real reason behind the catchweight stipulation was to get inside Cotto’s head and possibly force Cotto to over train out of fear of being financially penalized for coming in over the agreed weight.

The result of this head game seems to have worked to some degree as Cotto opened camp several weeks earlier than normal and has made adjustments to lifestyle and diet…all for that one, “inconsequential,” pound.

Next, came Team Pacquiao’s insistence that Cotto put up his welterweight title in the bout, something that Cotto was squarely against. When the reigning champ balked at putting up the title to an unranked challenger in a catchweight bout, the WBO stepped in and instantly made Pacquiao the number one contender while informing Cotto that he would either put up the title or be stripped.

Again, score another one for Team Pacquiao’s quest to get inside Cotto’s head.

To add insult to injury, if you scour press reports, you’ll find Bob Arum, head of Top Rank and promoter of both Cotto and Pacquiao, discussing Pacquiao’s next fight and upcoming plans; No such talks take place regarding Cotto.

Also, as Pacquiao attempts to “make history” by being the first fighter to win seven titles in seven different weight classes, don’t think that the weight of history isn’t already weighing heavily on the officials of this bout.

It’s basic boxing knowledge that officials often have a tendency to lean towards what should happen in such important encounters instead of what’s actually happening. The desire to be part of history is strong; the desire to not impede history is even stronger. Coming into the November 14th battle, Pacquiao will find a group of officials who are, at the very least, willing to give all things Pacquiao the benefit of the doubt.

So, with a catchweight stipulation on his mind and after having conceded every possible advantage during pre-fight negotiations, Cotto steps into a ring full of Pacquiao-friendly officials, a solitary man, belittled by his own promotional company and bullied by the sanctioning body he represents.

Then, after suffering these indignities and mind games, he has to go up against the Filipino Buzzsaw, boxing’s current pound-for-pound champ, Manny Pacquiao.

If Miguel Cotto doesn’t prove to have a will of iron and a resolve of solid steal, he’s lost this one before the opening bell even rings.

Hey Mr. Magno.. This is not a fixed game as you imagined. 145 lbs is the agreed weight that’s why it is called catch weight. Understood? catch- means contract(v).The contracted bout for the welterweight fight might range from 141 lbs to 147 lbs depending on the settlement for both camps. Please take research or study your lesson well before taking your exam. your failure..

Understand that WW is 141 to 147 and the catchweight was originally 143 but agreed on contract to 145… 1 pound is not a problem for a true champion like cotto since he was 146 at the clottey bout im a big cotto fan seen all his fight but im filipino so i have to go for Pacquiao… You cant knock off Mannys greatness since he was from Flyweight n 130 40 at his best n Cotto been fighting at his best his whole career in WW… Cotto is challege by a smaller man n they had agreement with no excuses but the thing is Pacquiao has no WW fights n became the 1 contender in the weightclass but you have other contender such as Berto n dont get the fight. Well Pacquiao is P4P king so he call the shot who he wants to fight n its up to the fighter to accept the challenge Cotto is a true fighter so he just need to stop Pacquaio on his journey to be The BEst Of ALl Time…

although i am going for cotto in this fight, i have to agree with the majority…..maggie youre a numskull. i won’t say that pacquiao’s camp won the negotiations. i’ll say that cotto’s camp actualluy trusted their fighter and actaully manned up to a real challenge. Cotto’s camp is well aware of it’s fighter’s capacity and i don’t believe their camp is crying about the outcome. and to EMREAL stop trash-talking Mayweather. He would make lechon ribs out of Pacqiao.

  • Nobull1785

Exactly i agree weakostrong but to tell you Mayweather is a great fighter but pacquiao is the best all around fighter the only fighter who can see Money… Pacquiao prime n its the the other way around hell make lechon ribs out of Money… Speed against speed Pacquiao wins Money was fast in JWWboxing IQ now, Pacquiao wins the only reason why he won against Marquez cuz the same style counterpunchers whoever is better wins.. Money never face someone like Pacquiao even Mayweather scared to facce Cotto n thats a fact…

    I rest my case.

Now, Please, Manny…fight within the boundaries of the real divisions…As you are now the Welterweight champ, fight within the structures of the welterweight division: anything over 140 up to 147, not just one arbitrary number in between…

I believe the fight was fix.
BUT! it was fix in favor of Cotto. We all saw the fight. From 1st – 9th round. Pacquiao is not fighting the same way he was fighting before. He never follow up on his punches. He’s letting Cotto punch him without punching Cotto back. The only time that you saw Pacquiao fought the same way he was fighting the same way he was fighting was after 9th round.

I believe that since both Pacquiao and Cotto are both from Top Rank. And at the same time. They are both Bob Arum’s “MONEY MAKERS”. He will not let Cotto get destroyed in 1 to 3 rounds because that will end his career. You’ll got to realize that Pacquiao’s last fights are with the best in the business. And he retires all of them including Oscar Dela Hoya. Which is a legend. Which Pacquiao would have knocked out too he he didn’t let up.

I believe that the deal was. No one will get knocked out until the 9th round. They didn’t stop the fight until the 12 round. But Manny is not even preying on Cotto when the ref stop the fight.

The doctor should have been involve a lot sooner. And you all know that the fight should have been over before 7th. You all saw the fight. Don’t believe me. Watch it again.
