Haye Takes Title From Valuev
By Trent Pusey - November 7, 2009 | Email the author

David Haye defeated Nikolai Valuev by majority decision in Nuremberg, Germany to capture the WBA Heavyweight title. It is Haye’s first World title in the heavyweight division since moving up from cruiserweight in 2008. The scores were 116-112, 116-112, and 114-114.

Haye used his speed to outmaneuver Valuev. He forced Valuev to chase him and proved too elusive for Valuev to maintain a consistent attack. Haye wobbled Valuev in the 12th round but neither man hit the canvas.

John Ruiz was victorious on the undercard, as expected. Ruiz defeated Adnan Serin when Serin’s corner threw in the towel at 1:34 of the 7th round. Ruiz suffered a cut from a headbutt in the 4th round but was mostly dominant against the overmatched Serin.

With the win, John Ruiz is guaranteed a title shot against David Haye by the end of May 2010.
