Griffin’s post-fight antics not a result of injury
by Jeremy Botter on August 9, 2009

Reports circulated last night and this morning that Forrest Griffin’s decision to leave the Octagon and the arena were due to a possible broken/dislocated jaw and hearing loss. The reports, which were started on a popular MMA message board and circulated widely by the Telegraph, stated that Griffin left in order to seek immediate medical care.

Inside Fights has confirmed with sources close to Griffin’s camp that he did not leave the cage due to injury. While we don’t know why he abruptly left the cage (other than being upset and emotional after his loss), we can confirm that the injury reports are not true.

he left the cage due to embarrassment. That seemed pretty clear to me.

  • Robert

he left, he left. He’ll be back. its just a matter of time. there always has to be a winner and loser at everything and this time Silva came out the winner…..for now! props to both those dudes….i sure as hell can’t take a punch from Griffin nor Silva

  • david

wow that has nothing to do with anything steve…I think Griffin is hurt… Griffin has to much heart to just leave like that…how about you wait until Griffin says something himself and not believe “sources”

  • http://www.AddiSports.com Tim

I’d prefer it if everybody waited until hearing from Forrest or Dana before forming their opinions. Every source that says he was hurt and every source that says he’s fine is vague as hell.

Why is this big news? I imagine he left to get his jaw and hearing checked out, but even if he did leave cause he was embarassed so what? Remember we are talking about a guy who played a pivotol role in bringing mma into the mainstream. It would be great if the so called “reporters” (using that term very loosely) would cut the guy some slack and report on something actually news worthy

  • chad

why isnt torres on the list of the best fighters in the word that is my vote .. pound for pound

“sources” is another term for opinion. Let’s all wait till Forrest responds rather than jump to conclusions solely based on “sources”

Sitting cageside, I can say that he didn’t say a thing when he left the octagon. He sort of banged the door, they opened it, he ran right past press row and out of the octagon side area.

    Weird match.

Okay, aside from my opinion that Griffin is the lousiest, most undeserving fighter out there, he left the ring because he is a coward. There is no positive excuse for his action last night. He was embarresed the way he deserves it. He cried when he lost to Jardine and I’m pretty sure he must’ve been shiting in his pants after what Silva did to him. I’ve said it many times, FORREST GRIFFIN DOES NOT DESERVE ALL THE CREDIT HE GETS. HE LOST TO STEPHAN BONNAR IN THEIR 1ST FIGHT AND HE DID NOT WIN AGAINST RAMPAGE. DANA WANTS HIM TO BE THE POSTER BOY BECAUSE HE MUST BE HIS LOVER, NOT BECAUSE HE IS A GOOD FIGHTER. Go ahead, say that he beat Shogun, that would never happen again, guaranteed. (Shogun fought with an injured leg)

  • Tod

I never like Forrest griffen. But ur saying he is a coward. The same guy whose arm broke during a fight and still knocked his opponent out.. Shit u can say u would fight Anderson silva on the Internet but when it comes to it u wouldn’t. Forrest isn’t a coward he is the guy that made mma big he carries that on his shoulders.. Plus he did better than u would ever do even if u had help aganst silva…
Yes I am upset on his performanc I was in that Philly crowd that night I was hopeing for a 3 round fight but Forrest is a “bitch” he lasted 3 min aganst the best pound for pound fighter in the world..He is a coward cause he lasted 2 and a half minuites more than you would..

  • MiamiGator

Mark my words. Forrest Griffin will never fight again, why should he? I like him as a person and a fighter, but he was beyond overmatched, he looked so slow, there is no reason to fight again, he had a great run, maybe go into coaching
He actually gave a better fight than the last few opponents of Silva’s, the only guy that can match Silva is Machida, but both have said they are friends and they will not fight, its obvious that Silva should move up in weight class, because no 185 pounder can match him, I love GSP, but I just think that Silva would be way to big for him, and GSP never gets punched anymore, so could he withstand the striking of Silva?

  • Joseph

I was very disappointed with Forrest, it almost looked like he threw the fight. I really don’t think he performed at the level he could of. I also don’t think Silva is as good as eveyone says and if put up against Rush the outcome would be very different for Silva.

  • Erik Cooksey

I wanted Forrest to win,but I knew when the fight first stated & Forrest was throwing those wild kicks that he was not taking Silva seriously.then when the fight was over I was thinking was that Forrest Gump?Maybe somebody in the crowd yelled”Run,Forrest Run”It looked like silva didnt even break a sweat.I hope this loss humbles forrest up a little bit. He’s not as great as he thinks he is……..

  • ronaldo

Anderson is to UFC what Pele was to soccer. Don’t blame Forrest.

  • Quentin

“But there’s nobody in this sport at 205 you put me in with and I won’t make it a fight.” -Forrest Griffin

Um, I think I know somebody! In fairness, Anderson was still a middleweight when he said that. I’d love to hear his response to this fight.

And Tod, give me a break. Forrest probably made like half a million dollars for that fight. I’d step in there and get knocked out by Silva for half a mil. And while I’m not gonna sit here and claim that I would beat Forrest in a fight, I think there’s a good chance that I could step into the ring with Silva tomorrow (without the benefit of 3-4 months of preparation) and do a better job than Forrest just did. I could hardly do worse. He needs to bounce back quick against a decent fighter or his UFC career is probably over.

  • Kevin

if everyone wants to forgive forrest for running out of the cage that’s fine (so do I), but to think he left due to injury is ridiculous. if you think that in his emotional and mental state he was able to access his physical condition your fooling yourselves. this is the second time that he’s run out after being totally demoralized in the octagon (remember the Jardine fight). i can totally understand that he wouldnt want to have an emotional meltdown for the world to see, but face it, it is POOR sportsmenship to do what he did. just because the world wants to ride the injury excuse so they dont have to face his immature antics doesnt change the facts. i’m a big forrest fan and didnt want to see him take this fight because i knew the risk factor was to great. but regardless, i still can accept the fact….he left the ring because of his mental and emotional state, not his physical!! God bless you Forrest…your loved by all.

  • James

This is what happens when you take a TV show contestant and match him against a real fighter who has studied since he was a kid and fought all over the world.
Nothing against Forrest, I am sure he could be a good fighter with the training.
But UFC continues to throw these cards together with these fighters from their TV reality shows, who know little about fighting. Then they contend with real fighters as we saw in this UFC, and get laughed at.
The best thing this UFC event did was show the difference between a real fighter and a fighter the UFC tried to “Develop”.
Neither Silva or Penn were developed by the UFC.

  • Doug

I’m not trying to argue and say that griffin is best or anything like that but lets just recall something here. How many top notch fighters have stepped into the ring with Silva and hes made them look like jokes. Forrest in my opinion didn’t fight a smart fight, he tried to have a brawl with Silva and it didn’t work, big deal. To say hes done and washed up is ridiculous. Silva dismantled Henderson, and Henderson came back just fine. His poor sportsmanship aside, hell be back.

  • Chaka Lives

The first time I witnessed Anderson Silva fight was when he gave an official “beat-down” on Chris Leben. I was so impressed that I went to the internet and watched some old fights of the Spider. I then said to myself, “Self, it’s about time the UFC got itself a truly talented fighter”. Really, how many cookie-cutter MMA poons can one handle, right? And after his shut down on Franklin, Lutter, Marquart, Franklin “again”, Henderson, Irvin, it was no surprise to see Forrest get humiliated in the first round. Although Cote had tremendous heart in his fight, he was way under-classed. I think Silva knew that, felt sorry for the guy, and that’s why he held back on the boy. Leitas? The ONLY way that dude made it to the 5th round was because he kept rolling over like a bitch. And peeps get all “upidy” because Silva didn’t murder him like all the others he’s fought? My point being, is that Silva’s skills are WAY beyond anything the UFC currently has to offer him. He’s got a masterful mix of traditional and mixed martial arts skills, and excellent cardio capacity. Although somebody could get a “lucky” KO on him, with all-do-respect, he makes World Champion Fighters look like freaking amateurs.

forrest is much more than a tv show contestant, he has developed into a world class fighter with wins over rampage, and shogun(thought to be the best 205 at the time). the differnce is silva forces everyone he fights to fight his way. He wont go to the ground and waits for his opponents to make the first move. He may have devasting finishes to fights but he isnt willing to change his fighting style. If forrest hadnt walked in and tried to make he fight a “brawl” anderson easily would have stayed cautious and did as little as possible in order to squeeze out the win

  • Ryan Horan

There is no way forrest was NOT hurt. That was a walking away jab that Silva didnt put anything behind and wasnt intended to be a knockout punch. Griffin had to be injured to let that knock him out. I don’t care what the sources say.

  • Nexus_6

Anderson Silva today is Roy Jones Jr. in the 90s (and early 2000s). Nobody in or around his weight class even comes close.

  • joe momma

Forrest might want to hang up his gloves and pick up a pen. stick to books because your fighting days arethrough. nobody bounces back from an ass whipping like that. Tyson was a joke after he got beat by Douglas ( he only beat nobodys ) and sadly this will be the same thing that happens to Forrest. Who gets knocked out by a JAB by a man who is walking backwards?

  • lesnar fan

forrest will be back, but he never stood a chance against the spider and most likley never will

silva is simply a freak of nature, did you see that head movement? he looked better than ali in his prime

and although it pains me to say it, forrest ran up outta that place so the fans wouldnt see him crying

Forrest Griffin has always showed the world that he is a courageous warrior who is not afraid to stand up to the best. Over time he has become one of the UFC’s most popular fighters because he knows how to give an ass beating and he knows how to fight through difficult situations. I was completely caught off gaurd the way he layed down and gave up against Silva. Yes I am a huge Anderson Silva fan and I am Forrest Griffin fan to a certain extent. I appreciate how Forrest has helped the UFC gain popularity but his performance was less than stellar. Anderson Silva is a scary man. To know one single man has the power and technique to destroy a warrior men the way he does almost seems “God” like. Forrest Griffin obviously left the cage due to embarrasment. He trained hard and in his mind he was ready to give another great Forrest Griffin shows but instead fell to a man that obviously has a packed with the devil for mortal skill.

  • FullyContacted

you know its pretty pathetic that people still try to compare forrest griffin to world class fighters. And that tyson and douglas comment, tyson and douglas fought 2 or 3 times prior to his loss, with tyson winning all times except the final fight. So with that said eventually a fighter becomes accustomed to another fighters style thus proposing a winning style. Forrest in my mind is good fighter but Silva is a great fighter. Some fighters have gifts and it comes natural to them. Penn, Silva, Fedor, St. Pierre, Couture, and in my opinion Don Frye also. But again its the ratings, money, and hype that prevail against actual athletic talent. The hype of the Gracies, Chuck Liddel, and the most disrespectful hype thats pushed in ACTUAL MMA FANS is Brock Lesnar. Forrest needs to gain some conduct. Hes there to give an interview when he wins but not when he loses. Thats not a real champion. And to all you Joe 6 Pack type fans that converted from WWE to UFC I suggest this to you. Buy DVD box sets of the early ufc’s and watch the progresstion of the from then until now, then take a BJJ class or in my case a BJJ and mma training camp (Capital Punishment, Austin, TX)and then go into the cage a couple of times and after you’ve completed task proceed to watching mma bouts. Then you will see what im talking about. Like I said Forrest is a good fighter but hes not a great fighter. True raw talent will prevail.

    Re Ryan:

I’m pretty sure he was hurt, too. I’ve only seen the fight once, but I remember very early on after he got hit he tried calling for a pause like he poked in the eye, then shrugged it off and kept fighting. I think that punch did some serious damage, possibly fracturing something, but he fought through it because it didn’t put him out. That would also explain why he went down from such a weak blow and cried uncle as soon as he hit the ground.

Still, I don’t think that was why he ran out after the fight. That was just an act of shame.

  • Tat2Don

The only thing that was hurt in that fight was Forrest Griffin’s Pride . I am a huge Anderson Silva Fan ,I am also a Forrest Griffin fan , I knew the only chance Forrest had to win that fight was to go in there and be the warrior he is . He did not do that . He robbed himself of that , more importantly he robbed his millions of fans of an explanation . Forrest , be Forrest , cry , tell us you got your ass whipped , we saw it , we know , but don’t be a Bitch about it . You cant only comment when you win . Im gonna go out on a limb and speculate that Silva , had he lost , would’ve had more class than that …looks like you lost that fight too .
    Run Forrest Run !

  • http://jbotter.wordpress.com Jeremy Botter

Once again, he’s not hurt. This has been confirmed by multiple sources, including his publicist and Griffin himself.

He almost got poked in the eye by Silva and Silva started apologizing. Griffin wasn’t trying to pause the fight, he was telling Silva that he was fine and that the fight could continue.

If he were injured, you would have heard about it already. The reality is that he went in with a certain gameplan, he fought a completely different gameplan, and he paid for that decision by getting hit right on the button three times. Anyone would go down from that. Plus, Shane Carwin proved that you can turn someone’s lights out with a jab when he knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga.

  • Gabriel

    @ Jeremy:

I’m pretty sure it was the other way around – Griffin almost eye-poked Silva and so Silva warned him to watch his fingers, and Griffin then apologized.

  • Josh

Maybe Forrest THOUGHT his jaw was messed up!? Possibility, I think so. As for anyone who has ever been in a cage/fight…i’ve been punched so damn hard that my hearing went out for a few minutes. Forrest has a damn good reason…let’s hear it from him!

  • JR

Ever think Forrest may have thrown the fight?? He has taken much bigger beatings. He did not get hit that often or that hard. He did not appear that hurt. He was able to get up and sprint back down a long aisle to his dressing room on his own. He makes no public statement afterward. All sounds and looks very fishy.
