St. Pierre to resume training “within a few weeks”

That groin injury from UFC 100 wasn’t nearly as damaging as St. Pierre self-diagnosed in the cage. That’s according to St. Pierre’s manager, Shari Spencer, who issued a statement to the media last night.

“Evaluation of the results of an MRI indicate that no surgery will be required, and Georges should be back in the gym training within a few weeks after a brief rehabilitation,” Spencer said.

This is good news for the UFC, as it gives them more potential options for headliners on the Ultimate 2009 card on January 2nd. It’s considered a lock internally that heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will defend the belt on that card, but it hasn’t been determined who his opponent will be. Both Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez have been promised title shots, but they don’t have to be immediate title shots, which leaves the door open for Randy Couture (if he has a great showing against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 101 in August) or even the slightest chance of bringing in Fedor Emelianenko to face the champion.
