Frank Mir doesn’t know when to quit
by Jeremy Botter on July 13, 2009

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

When Lesnar didn’t come after me, that really threw me off. He didn’t land any punches on his feet, did he? I didn’t expect him to run. He ran like a lightweight. … It’s my fault. I should have trained that he would be intimidated from the standup.

When I chased him (in the second round), that’s what changed my game plan. I basically was (within) a half-an-inch of catching him. I knew he was hurt, but he had good leverage, with my shoulder against the cage. I made a stupid mistake.

If I can just nail that weight gap to even 10 pounds, it’ll be a different fight next time.

If Frank Mir can win a match or two, we’re almost guaranteed to see a third fight between he and Lesnar. In that sense, it’s probably wise to keep the fire burning for another big pay per view matchup, but if Frank Mir even believes one tenth of what he’s saying here, there’s a chance he might be insane or at least delusional. The fight didn’t stay on the feet long enough for Lesnar to “run like a lightweight” and I’ve got serious doubts that he was afraid of Frank Mir’s overrated standup game.

Mir caught Lesnar with two good knees in the second round, and the second “Faber” knee probably would have dropped a large majority of heavyweights. But I’ve watched the fight about ten times now, and at no point was Lesnar hurt by anything Mir did.

I’m pretty sure we’re going to see Lesnar vs. Mir 3 in 2010 at some point, and it should shatter all pay per view buyrate records. This is probably just Frank’s way of guaranteeing another big payday, but he might be guaranteeing another mauling as well.

i a huge frank mir fan and i think thatif he trains his subbmition enough he will win also i think him gaining weight is stupid becuase if he gains weight his flexabilty will decrease so hell find it harder to lock in submissions and hes fmous for his submmisions

MMA is for losers who like to watch men wrap their legs around each other, can you say creepy!

  • LEO

Brock is amazing! In the 2nd round when frank mir did the flying knee…Mir fell to the ground and brock with “one arm pulled mir towards him”. Freakish strength.

BRock exemplifies: Force = mass x acceleration.

  • SL4T

Mir should learn take-down defense, keep his current shape and fight Brock Machida-style.

  • DeathClutch8109

I just cant beleive it…COME ON!! Frank, when the hell are you going to stop talking crap, and fess up?? You still think Lesnar was lucky…lol, You could weigh 290 if you want, and Brock would still slam your ass in the ground and pound you into a TKO! It’s just the way it is, deal with it. Lesnar is going to beat Mir every time. Oh, I love th comment you made that you would win in 100 fights 99% of the time… I know, maybe he wont see this, but you would be surprised how many fighters love to read everything, from everywhere…

  • BareKnuckle

Mir ain’t getting a big payday if they fight again. Brock will. Lesnar earned almost 10 times more than his opponent.
    Mir $45K
    Brock $400K

Mir won’t get that much money in the UFC, ever.

  • http://www.thefavoritesrock.com bford

Mir is just silly.. or nutty.. or both.. truthfully.. I have no desire to see these two fight again…just a waste of my time, watching Mir’s face turn into hamburger meat again.

  • igor Semenov

Bareknuckle, do your research, mir and lesnar both made about 3 mill each. the pay for mir to fight was 45k but that doesnt include any PPV buys

  • http://jbotter.wordpress.com Jeremy Botter

Mir’s PPV cut isn’t remotely as big as Lesnar’s PPV cut. Mir will be lucky to cross $800k for the fight.

  • http://insidefights Big Steve Philly

Mir is a great fighter, however Lesnar’s size did play a big role in winning the fight.I’m not sure we will see a Lesnar/Mir rematch soon as bford commented it would be a waste at this point of time.

Dana White is pushing strong for a Fedor/Lesnar fight which would be a great fight and Fedor will win.I believe the UFC needs to import more animals like Fedor to make the fights with Lesnar fairly matched and to put Lesnar in his rightful place. He’ a big fish in a small pond right now and he’s basking in all the glory but all that will change once the right guy his size comes in and kicks his ass.The other MMA fighters are targeting him big time based on his “attitude”.

  • >U

I’d be willing to bet anyone here that Mir wins the third match. I’m not willing to debate this because it’s pointless and I’m confident it’ll prove true on its own.

Mir has overrated stand up? The one and only man to ko finish Big Nog? Watch that fight: his stand up game is amazing.

Anyone have anything good to say about Lesnars standing game? Seriously flawed, take a look at it. I agree, if he gets on top of you you’re done for, but we’ve seen those type of odds overcome many times in the past.

When Mir and Lesnar fight again, Lesnar will no longer be holding the belt.

  • http://jbotter.wordpress.com Jeremy Botter

Mir also beat a Big Nog who had just gotten out of the hospital with a staph infection and had a partially torn ACL. He kept it quiet because he didn’t want people making excuses for him, but that’s exactly what happened. Look at the fight again; the guy looked like death and Mir was able to pick him apart because of it.

  • Taffy

People keep making excuses for Mir,saying it was Brocks size/weight that beat him.
When I trained MA it was drummed into us that you use your opponents size against them.
I think that Brock turning the game on its head and showing all these traditionalists that everything they’ve been taught counts for nothing is what really grips their nuts.
They don’t seem to understand that while his next opponents have probably reached the apex of their careers,he’s only going to get better.
If he can do what he’s doing now as a relative novice, whats he going to be like when he gains more knowledge/experience?
They keep throwing up Fedors name but he’d be dwarfed by Brock and most probably would go the way of Randy and Mir.
Arlovski would be a much better bet,as to many peoples minds he had Fedor on the back foot when he got caught by a lucky shot as he jumped in for the kill.
No matter who Brock beats next though people will keep saying “How about this guy or that guy or The Hulk,or King Kong”,rather than admit “Brocks the Man!”.

  • jimbob

First off, I’m not a fan of Mir or Brock but the facts show that Brock is a freak and he demolished Mir. In regards to Fedor, he is just a machine that is too committed and too good to be beaten. Too bad the UFC won’t allow Brock to prove himself against Fedor outside of the restrictive control of the UFC because Fedor would absolutely win. Arlovski has no chin and if you watch the fight without bias you can see that Fedor not only blocked almost everything Arlovski threw but that “lucky punch” was completely calculated and proved that Arlovski just has no chin.

  • OnePunch

Frank Mir needs to work on his take down defense, he is known for his dangerous guard so he probably doesn’t train his take down defense as much. I agree he should gain the weight, he walks comfortably at 255 all year, and at fight night he was 245 and Brock was probably at 280. Thats like a heavyweight fighting a light heavyweight. I seriously think it won’t effect as much Mir’s speed and agility if he gains 20 pounds, and I not talking in fat but in muscle, and he would be alot stronger. I’ve rather have strength than agility. Mir has so much potential it’s scary.

  • George

We really need to get off Fedor’s jock, I’ve seen plenty of fights from him that didn’t impress me one bit, and personally I think Brock would knock his teeth all over the mat, and I’m sad that the Cowardly Fedor turned down UFC’s offer.

And as far as Mir goes shut up, retire and go back to Bouncing clubs in Vegas, because you got completely embarrassed and handled at UFC 100. Mir is a worthless fighter who talks a big game but never backs it up and in my opinion is too weak to stay in this division preferably he should hang it up.

I honestly can’t wait for Brocks next “victim” because I only see him getting better.

i am a mir fan and i would like to say hello!! this was a second match !! mir one the first match up yes he did get beat this time, but guess what brocks day will come. i think it is funny how mir loses a match then everyone turns their back oh he should retire, blah blah, blah! ok well i hope lesnar does get the crap kicked out of him he has no respect for anyone he put on a really good speech in the ring and he was right about one thing he belongs in the wwe. and then he looked even dumber when he did the post interview to say he was sorry… he is stupid and i can not stand him whoever beats him i do not know who it will be i hope they pull the horseshoe out of his butt…. i guess my point is that if you like a fighter then you should stay a fan even if they lose and yes mir did talk alot of mess but what fighter does not before a fight????? back to my point lesnars ring of terror will end one day and i can not wait to see it..

  • austin

i think mir shouldn’t have taken this fight so lightly he should have worried more about brocks ground game and worked on take down defense and shouldn’t have gone into the fight think his bjj would save him on the ground. brock is to massive and far to good of a wrestler to have that much confidence in your ground game no matter who you are… if he gained weight worked on his take down defense so he could show off his improved stand up and maybe got some better take downs of his own(becuase if he end up on top submitting brock most likly wouldn’t be a problem) he could stand a chance in match #3 but if he f*** up at all he will end up on the bottom and get his face knocked in unless brock makes a huge mistake.(and as randy couture will say it is always harder to make changes to your game plan if you won then lost)

  • Claude

Ok, here’s how I see it:
From an objective point of view, Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir was a great fight! It showed how much does a fight mean to them.
First of all, I don’t understand why people hate on Brock. He did an excellent job, and proved himself by gaining retribution against Mir. He DID act very unprofessional after the fight, but if you analyze all the pre-fight interviews of Frank Mir, you will come to realize that Frank DID NOT JUST SELL THE FIGHT. It was obvious he didn’t like Brock, and said many mean and unnecessary things about him. If someone would have done something similar to one of you Brock Lesnar HATERS, you would probably act worse than him, so shut up!
Second, not taking anything from Frank Mir. He is an excellent fighter and JJ artist and still has time to recover. BUT FRANK, if you want to be the better man like you claim, let Brock ROAR like a GORILLA and BE HUMBLE, TAKE IT LIKE A MAN especially when being dominated like that. If Frank would have gave Brock credit in an post-fight interview and recognize his hard work, then Frank would HAVE BEEN the BETTER MAN!
SO basically, Brock STOP ACTING like an unprofessional A-hole and Mir STOP TALKING TRASH especially after a loss like that, and ONLY THEN we can all live HAPPILY ever after!
IN conclusion, congrats Brock, congrats Mir, GREAT FIGHT!

I don’t think Brock should be n the ufc hint my drift mma is mixed martial arts he jus lays there n beats there head n he never had his chin tested so I think shane carwin will knock his bitch ass out

  • jonathan

the knee that mir landed (which ended with him on his back) did in fact hurt brock, brock admited(in a post fight interview) he blaked out for a second when he was hit with the knee
