A heavyweight contenders fight between prospects Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez could serve as the co-main event for UFC 103 on September 19th in Dallas, sources have told Inside Fights.
The bout, which has not been agreed to, could potentially serve as the co-main event alongside a welterweight bout between Texas native Mike Swick and future UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. The heavyweight fight would elevate either Carwin or Velasquez into instant contendership for the heavyweight title, and a win by Swick would make him the number one contender to Georges St. Pierre’s welterweight championship.
Another fight that has been discussed internally is Chuck Liddell facing Rich Franklin. Dana White has seemingly accepted the idea that Chuck is going to want another fight, and he would much rather have Liddell inside the UFC cage than to have him go and be a huge drawing card for Strikeforce or Affliction.
We’ll have more on this story in the near future.
UPDATE: Shane Carwin says he hasn’t been contacted about the Velasquez fight. We’re still a few months from the show, so it isn’t surprising that he hasn’t heard of the fight yet.
Velasquez revealed a lot vs. Kongo. I always thought he would beat Kongo with relative ease, though he got rocked a few times. On the other hand, I think he also showed that he’s vulnerable to getting rocked hard. Carwin can pack the punch and he’s also a good wrestler. When Carwin knocks Cain, Cain will not be able to take him down for protection. Carwin will face off against the winner of Mir and Lesnar. I will be putting money on that. In my opinion, Lesnar, Mir, Couture and Carwin are the top 4 fighters, followed by Nog.
Swick could have trouble against Hughes.

why would anyone in Velazquez’s camp agree to this fight?
He might as well go ahead and fight Lesnar. I know the UFC doesn’t build up fighters, but this is the worst possible matchup for Velasquez, even if he manages to win.
Carwin vs Valasquez is probably not a good thing for Cain. He showed his weaknesses in his fight with Kongo, he got rocked more times then I can count and his wrestling saved him. Carwin has more KO power and better wrestling then Kongo, I just don’t see how Carwin can lose this fight.
Expect Mike Swick to smash Matt Hughes.
