Carwin vs. Gonzaga Slated For UFC 96
by Jeremy Botter - December 20, 2008 | Email the author

Former UFC heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga will face rising heavyweight star Shane Carwin at the yet-to-be-announced UFC 96 event in March. Our sources have confirmed that the original plan would have seen Gonzaga facing Cain Velasquez, but the merchandising disagreement between Zuffa and American Kickboxing Academy has instead resulted in Carwin getting the higher profile match and the potential push towards the heavyweight title picture.

Carwin, a two-time NCAA Division II wrestling champion, is undefeated in his mixed martial arts career.

What a great HW fight. A fight with Brock Lesnar looms – whether or not he beats Nog it would seem.

Couture vs the loser of Mir/Nog…so Couture vs. Mir?

Yep, Carwin will be pushed into the title picture if he dominates Gonzaga. If Lesnar beats Nog or Mir, I can easily see them giving Carwin the next shot at Lesnar. If Lesnar loses, I still see them putting Carwin against Lesnar.

That fight WILL happen before the end of 2009.
